Headline: RAW VIDEO: Four Die In Italian Cable Car Accident Near Naples
Caption: Four people have died and another has been seriously injured after a cable car crashed near Naples in southern Italy on Thursday (17April2025). The incident occurred when a cable snapped on the popular tourist link between the coastal town of Castellammare di Stabia and Monte Faito, a mountainous area overlooking the Gulf of Naples. The bodies of four victims were recovered at the scene, while a fifth individual was pulled from the wreckage with serious injuries and transported to the Ospedale del Mare hospital in Naples. Italy’s fire brigade and rescue service confirmed: “Since this afternoon, over 50 firefighters have been involved in the rescue operation following the collapse of a cable car cabin on Mount Faito. Specialists from the SAF (Speleo Alpino Fluviale) unit are operating under complex conditions to stabilise the cabin and prevent further movement or the risk of it rolling.” Emergency teams also worked to clear parts of the cable which had fallen onto the Circumvesuviana railway line and the roof of a nearby house. In a separate effort, nine people were rescued unharmed from a second cable car cabin, which had become stranded but did not fall. The fire service described the death toll as final and confirmed that rescue operations had concluded. One of the cabins, which was carrying 16 passengers, was safely lowered near Castellammare di Stabia. However, a second cabin had become suspended above a steep ravine on Monte Faito, with poor visibility further delaying rescue attempts, local media reported. The cable car service had only resumed operations for the summer season ten days earlier. Prosecutors have opened an investigation into the cause of the accident. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni extended her “sincere condolences” to the families of the victims, according to a statement from her office. The cable car system, which has been in operation since 1952, has seen tragedy before: a similar incident in 1960 also claimed four lives.
