In a statement, the sheriff’s office said: “Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office is happy to report Tango 82 aviation crews located Zebra Ed and returned him to his owner Sunday.” The operation involved aviation teams who successfully airlifted Ed by helicopter to a waiting animal trailer. Ed’s escapades began on 30 May when he was spotted in the area, shortly before he was reported missing by his owner. Sightings of the zebra running across both eastbound and westbound lanes of Interstate 24 sparked a frenzy on social media, turning Ed into something of a viral sensation with memes and international interest. Following a brief disappearance into a wooded area, he was not seen again until Thursday.
